Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country

Cultural Heritage Management can at times include site based cultural activities,  performed on country. Last week Bunurong Elder Uncle Mik and his son Eric were invited to carry out a Smoking Ceremony as part of their Welcome to Country for Summerset Holdings. Summerset are preparing to build an aged care village in Cranbourne North. Uncle Mik and Eric performed a welcome to country with site workers taking part in a traditional smoking ceremony.

Summerset combined the welcome to country with the Turning of the Sod – a ceremony  which acknowledges culture and heralds a new phase of the land’s story.

Attending the ceremony last week was a great opportunity to share in tradition with the Registered Aboriginal Party, Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, and further respect for the relationship to country and a shared future.
